What Is Biofilm?

Biofilm is present throughout our bodies in various forms and locations. At Springbank Dental Centre, we recognize the significance of maintaining good oral hygiene to prevent biofilm buildup on teeth.

Biofilm is an accumulation of microorganisms that form an adhesive film over surfaces like teeth. While biofilm may initially seem harmless, when left to accumulate, it can lead to serious dental issues, including cavities, gum disease, and bad breath.

Biofilm formation on teeth begins with bacteria found in our mouths. When we consume food, bacteria break down sugars and carbohydrates present in our mouths to release acids, which can erode tooth enamel and form cavities on teeth.

Buildup of biofilm on teeth is often difficult to spot at its early stages; over time, however, thickening and more visible biofilm may make detection easier.

At Springbank Dental Centre, we provide treatments designed to remove biofilm and prevent future dental issues from arising.

Guided biofilm therapy is an all-inclusive dental hygiene process that uses several techniques to remove biofilm from teeth and gums. The process begins with an assessment of oral health as well as an in-depth examination of both teeth and gums to establish where biofilm accumulations lie.

Once our dental hygienists have completed the assessment, they use an Airflow system to remove biofilm from teeth. This unique device uses air, water, and powder to dislodge plaque and tartar buildup effectively and gently.

Guided biofilm therapy is an extremely efficient method for clearing away biofilm from teeth, helping prevent dental problems from emerging, and eliminating bad breath. The procedure can be completed quickly in just one appointment.

Other than guided biofilm therapy, there are several things you can do at home to avoid the buildup of biofilm on your teeth. These include using fluoride toothpaste twice daily, flossing daily, and using an antiseptic mouthwash that kills any remaining bacteria in your mouth.

Springbank Dental Centre recommends scheduling regular checkups and cleanings with experienced dental professionals to assess your oral health and provide personalized recommendations on maintaining good oral hygiene.

Biofilm is a ubiquitous presence within our bodies, yet it can become particularly problematic when it accumulates on teeth. Reach out today so we can schedule an appointment and show how we can assist in maintaining your excellent oral hygiene.
