What to Expect at Your Dental Exam

Every patient’s needs are unique, which is why we take the time to get to know you and your oral health history. New patient exams are typically booked for 2 hours to provide a thorough assessment and personalized recommendations.

Hour 1: A Detailed Look at Your Oral Health

The first hour of your visit focuses on gathering important information, including:

  • Digital X-rays & intraoral scans: Providing a detailed view of your teeth and jaw health.
  • Gum health assessment: Checking for signs of gum disease (periodontitis).
  • Personalized discussion: Understanding your concerns, goals, and any symptoms you may be experiencing.

Hour 2: Technology-Driven Cleaning

Your hygienist will perform a professional cleaning using Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT)—this process includes:

  • A special dye to highlight areas of bacteria buildup (biofilm)
  • An explanation of what we see so you better understand your oral health
  • A thorough cleaning using a targeted solution and water to remove plaque and tartar

Our team will always present the best options for your health while helping you navigate your insurance coverage to maximize benefits.

Our Approach to Periodontal Health

Gum disease is one of the most underdiagnosed and undertreated conditions—yet it has a profound impact on overall health. Periodontal disease is a painless condition, so you can lose bone and tissue without even knowing it.

Research has linked periodontal disease to heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and even pregnancy complications. That’s why we take a proactive, whole-health approach to gum care.

At Springbank Dental Centre, our periodontal treatment protocol includes:

  • Comprehensive periodontal assessments to detect early signs of gum disease.
  • Saliva testing (available at an additional cost) to identify harmful bacteria, yeasts, and viruses that may be contributing to gum issues.
  • HybenX treatments to help manage advanced gum concerns and support healing.

Gum disease can go unnoticed, but its effects extend far beyond the mouth. Sometimes, when periodontal conditions persist after normal treatments, we do a comprehensive assessment, including salivary testing, to determine the best way to achieve oral health.

By addressing it early, we’re not just protecting your smile—we’re helping to safeguard your long-term health and well-being.

Saliva Testing for Periodontal Disease

Saliva testing is a valuable tool for gaining a deeper understanding of your oral and overall health. We offer saliva testing to help identify harmful bacteria that may be contributing to periodontal disease and other health issues.

This test is available at an additional cost and can provide important insights if our hygiene team feels it may benefit you. Here’s how it works:

  • Sample collection: A quick, painless swab is taken from your mouth.
  • Lab analysis: Your sample is sent to a lab for a detailed microbial analysis.
  • Personalized insights: Based on the results, we’ll create a tailored treatment plan to address any issues, such as gum disease, that may be detected.

VELscope Oral Cancer Screening

Oral cancer can be deadly, but early detection through screenings like the VELscope can save lives. This quick, painless exam uses blue light to detect abnormal cells that aren’t visible to the naked eye, revealing precancerous and cancerous lesions early when treatment is most effective.

Here’s how it works:

  • A special blue light is shone into your mouth to reveal underlying changes in tissue.
  • Healthy tissue appears green, while abnormal tissue, such as lesions or growths, will appear darker.
  • The examination takes only 2–3 minutes and can be performed during a routine check-up.
